NACOMYO rallies youths against environmental degradation

Published by

MUSLIM youths (NACOMYO) and organisations have been asked to initiate projects and programmes on the preservation of the environment in order to reverse the current global environmental degradation.

The charge was given by participants at the Muslim Youth Assembly organised by the Lagos State chapter of the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO), in Lagos, penultimate weekend.

The guest speaker at the event, Mr Adekoya Sheriff, warned of dire consequences “unless we change our approach to the environment.”

Sheriff attributed the increasing rate of flooding and other hazards to global warming and other harmful environmental practices.

He, therefore, called for adoption of environment-friendly energy reduction of plastic products, reuse as well as recycling of products.

Sheriff, an environmental advocate, urged NACOMYO to adopt environment-friendly projects such as solar-powered borehole and encourage its members as well as members of the public to buy into it.

He also appealed to the government to initiate programmes and policies such as subsidised solar panel and enforcement of environmental laws to encourage positive change to protect the environment.

The state coordinator of NACOMYO, Mr Abd Fattai Muheeb, said the choice of topic was informed by the need to educate the people on how to manage the environment to prevent problems arising from its neglect.

He said the organisation would take action to actualise the resolutions reached at the seminar.

“After the gathering, we are going to have assessment and reassessment to produce a workable programme of action. It is not just going to end a talk show,” he said.
