NACOMYO asks govt to address poor budgetary allocation to education, youth unemployment

Published by

THE National Youth Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO) has implored government at all levels in the country to increase education funding in their budgets and pay special attention to the needs of the youth in order to avert social crisis.

Addressing a press conference in Lagos to commemorate this year’s National Youth Day, the Lagos State coordinator of NACOMYO, Alhaji Isiaka Salami, deplored the budgetary allocations to education in the country, saying they fall short of the United Nations’ recommendation of 25 per cent.

“We use this medium to call on the Lagos State government to increase the budgetary allocation to education in its 2024 budget to the UN-recommended 25 percent,” Salami said.

He particularly took the state government to task, observing that allocation to education had hovered around 10 to 12 per cent in recent years.

He, however, commended the state government for increasing the number of state universities, saying the effort would improve access to education by the teeming population of young people in the state.

NACOMYO also challenged the government to pay special attention to youth employment in the country, stating that the 53.4 percent youth unemployment figure for the country is alarming.

The umbrella body of Muslim youth organisations also called for the protection of the rights of youths by the government.

On the international scene, NACOMYO condemned what it called the genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinians by Israel.

It, therefore, called on the United Nations and world leaders to prevail on Israel to stop the attack on Gaza and other Palestinian targets.
