The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has cautioned that this year’s Valentine’s celebration should be with the mindset that love and intimacy always go hand in hand with safety and responsibility, and therefore individuals should protect themselves and their partners.
Director General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori, in a press release signed by Mrs Toyin Aderibigbe, said the celebration of love this Valentine’s season should be based on informed choices, and steps should be taken to be protected from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
According to Dr Ilori, HIV remains a serious public health concern, but it is preventable even though engaging in risky behaviours—such as unprotected sex, multiple partners, or substance use that impairs judgement—can increase the risk of HIV transmission.
She declared, “We want everyone to enjoy Valentine’s Day while making choices that protect their health. HIV is preventable, and we have the tools to stop its spread. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed decisions.”
The release also declared, “Knowing your status is key to protecting yourself and others. Regular HIV testing should be a part of your healthcare routine. Free HIV testing is available at all government hospitals.

“This Valentine’s Day, show love—not just for others, but for yourself—by making safe and healthy choices.”
