The National Agency of the Control of AIDS (NACA), has empowered about 150 youths and women in Ogun State, in order to reduce poverty and gender inequality identified as key drivers that predispose young women and girls to the risk of HIV and AIDS epidemic.
The Chairman of NACA, Oladipo Odujinrin, disclosed this during the HIV intervention programme held at Ode-Remo, in Remo North Local Government Area of the state, said the empowerment program is to provide entrepreneurial training for the people, to own their businesses, so as not to engage in any risky behaviour.
Odujinrin stressed that HIV/AIDS continues to be a disease of global interest with the global target to end it by 2030.
Participants were trained in different vocations such as Adire making, makeup training, barbing, snacks and soap making.
“If people are employed, there won’t be a need to get involved in any risky behaviour,” the chairman said.
He advised participants to take advantage of the programme in becoming self-sufficient and employer of labour.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, noted that the programme would put food on the table of the beneficiaries.
“As we got empowered we have choice and when we have choice we can negotiate with men sexually
“All this programme comes from the federal government, our hope is that in Ogun State by the year 2025, we will have no case of HIV that has not been identified.
“So this empowerment program is very important because it helps us to put food on the table, give us choice as to what we want to engage and how we want to engage sexually and also, it helps us build Ogun State and community to a prosperous and growing economy,” she said.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Special Duties in Ogun State Femi Ogubanwo said the empowerment program organized by the federal government is to keep the youth busy and also to make them self sufficient.
