N14.6bn goods exported through Seme border in 2018 —Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Seme Area Command has revealed that N14.6bn Free On Board (FOB) value of goods was exported between January to December 2018 with a total NESS payment of N73,061,986.42. this is even as the Command raked in N6,294,860,182.98 also in 2018, representing about 76% of the revenue target allocated to the command.

A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of Seme Command, Saidu Nuruddeen Abdullahi, said the Enforcement Unit in an aggressive anti-smuggling drive against smugglers and non-compliant stakeholders made a total of 1,119 seizures with a duty paid value (DPV) of N1,394,136,023.00).

According to him, the seizures include : 1. 37,568 bags of 50kg foreign rice; 1,072 ( 50litres) of Jerry Cans of vegetable oil ; 169 vehicles ; 1,570 ( 50kg) Bags of sugar; General merchandise (10,439 items) 2,300 Cartons of Poultry Products; 168 pieces of used tyres ; 3,954 litres of Petroleum Products ; 119 parcels of hard drugs/Narcotics, adding that the grand total for both seizures and revenue stood at N9,247,809,065.98.

Abdullahi further disclosed that the Units also recorded total FOB value of goods exported from January to December, 2018, which stood at N14.612 ,402, 601.70 with a total NESS payment of N73,061, 986.42.

In the words of the Customs Area Controller, Seme Customs Command, Comptroller Mohammed Uba, “We have resolved to deploy more strategies to ensure that all revenue leakages are blocked and stakeholders who are ready to comply with proper procedures and guidelines are adequately sensitized to take advantage of the legitimate process in their transactions.”

He affirmed the command readiness to explore all avenues in order to ensure that the new target for the year is not only met but exceeded with the inauguration and resumption of operations at the new Joint border post, while reiterating his commitment towards continuous sanitizing of the border command to meet with international standards.
