My wife made my life miserable ‘cos I changed my faith, man tells court

A man, Yahaya, has sought the dissolution of the wedlock between him and his wife, Adenike, on the basis of differences in their religion.

Yahaya stated that he was practicing Christianity, but that he changed to Islamic religion after he got married to his wife.

According to him, this did not go down well with his wife, who bluntly refused to join him in his new faith.

The plaintiff explained that he and his wife daily drifted apart while there was a gap in their communication.

He further stated that they now live like strangers.

Yahaya, in addition to divorce, pleaded for custody of one of their two children.

Adenike acceded to divorce.

The plaintiff gave his testimony; “My lord, my wife and I did not conduct any marriage ceremony.

“I also did not pay her bride price.

“I was a Christian when we got married, but I later changed to Islamic religion.

“My decision did not go down well with my wife, who was bent on making life unbearable for me.

“Adenike refused to embrace my new faith and refused to cooperate with me in the home.

“We drew apart more and more, which led to a breakdown in our communication.

“She has completely abandoned all her duties in the home, thus leaving the whole place disorderly.

“My wife and I no longer see eye to eye. We live like strangers under the same roof.

“I appeal to this honourable court to end our relationship and grant me custody of one of our two sons while my wife has the other.

“I promise to give the child with her N10,000 monthly for food.”

The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case.
