Nigerian music sensation, Fireboy DML, has opened up on his transformative journey from university confusion to musical clarity.
He disclosed that his path to musical enlightenment was paved with uncertainty until the pivotal moment when he recorded his inaugural song during his university days.
Reflecting on his early academic years, Fireboy confessed, “I was lost, confused when I went to the university.”
However, amidst the academic maze, a beacon of clarity emerged as he found solace and purpose in the art of music.
Recalling the night he first stepped into the recording studio with friends and dancers, Fireboy reminisced about the profound conviction he felt as he laid down his thoughts and melodies.
“I felt the conviction in my bed the night I recorded my first song at the university. Prior to that time, I was lost, despite the fact that I was studying English, but I started going to the studio with my friends and dancers. So I figured out what my life would be like when I recorded my first song.”
In a recent interview with BET, he asserted, “I created my own sub-genre of Afrobeats because I knew my sound was different.”
He highlighted the void he perceived within the Afrobeats landscape, emphasising the dearth of “pure soul and lyricism” prior to his emergence.
Venturing beyond conventional Afrobeats, Fireboy introduced a genre he aptly dubs “Afro-Life,” characterised by its profound depth and emotive lyricism.
Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of artists ranging from Elton John to Wande Coal, Fireboy’s eclectic musical palette underscores his commitment to infusing soulful storytelling into his compositions.
Moreover, Fireboy’s meteoric rise to prominence has been punctuated by notable collaborations with industry heavyweights such as Blaqbonez, Madonna, and the chart-topping Ed Sheeran on the smash hit “Peru.”
His dynamic collaborations serve as a testament to his versatility and widespread acclaim within the global music scene.
