My music has nothing to do with my religion —D’New

Ajilore Daniel Oluwashina, otherwise known as D’New, a Hip-Hop artiste, has raised his game in the industry through hard work. In this interview with SEYI SOKOYA, he speaks on his experience and gradual rise to fame. Excerpts:

Your latest work has attracted a lot of public attention to you. Coupled with your relationship with Mayorkun. How has been the whole experience?

The experience has been awesome. I have been doing my best to come out with a production that people can easily connect with and that can stand the test of time. I pray God grant me the grace to be consistent in my delivery. Part of the efforts was the reason I did a collaboration with Mayorkun and I am grateful for the love and support I received from him. I feel happy teaming with him in taking the Hip Hop to the next level. We did not only do a song together; I was also privileged to perform at his Ibadan concert which was rated the best concert ever held in the city in recent time. I am fulfilled because I was able to prove my worth to people. It has even increased my fan base.

How did you discover your passion for music?

I grew up to find myself playing musical instruments, singing and dancing, because I became a member of the choir group of our church at age four when my parents noticed my love for music. Personally, I grew up listening to beautiful songs and always singing. So, at a point, I decided to take up music professionally.

Having gone this far, what is your next focus?

My plan is to release more singles and collaborations with top artistes. I am working towards having on collaborations with artistes like Dremo, Simi, Kizz Daniel, Olamide and Davido. All of them are kind, friendly and willing to encourage and support up-and-coming artistes.

What is your assessment of the entertainment industry?

It is progressing, as more talents are being discovered and investors coming into it. This development will give younger artistes the privilege to excel in their career.

Do you think the up-and-coming artistes are getting enough support in the industry?

It depends on individual; the relationship of up-and-coming artistes with the top artistes and their willingness to play along are one of the things that will determine how far one will succeed in the game.

How many songs do you have to your credit?

I have several songs, including For You and Kejike both were produced by Kiddominant. I also have one with DJSecxy entitled: Omoge Oloja. I have just completed another collaboration with Dremo and my latest single with Mayorkun  is entitled: Popoju is currently making airwaves.

You are the son of a cleric. Why are your into secular music?

I believe everyone has his own calling. Initially, my parents were against my choice, but with a strong intervention, they  agreed with me. I am not the first artiste that would have a cleric as parents; there are lots of celebrities that come from Christian homes and even have clerics as parents. My music has nothing to do with my religion. My talent is a gift from God and it will even be a sin if I bury it. I have the full support of my parents. They are my number one fans.

What has been your greatest challenge?

I have refused to be stopped by any challenge. I don’t get discouraged by challenges. As a young artiste, I have developed a thick skin to challenges or criticisms. I see criticism as a stepping stone to greatness.
