‘My husband threatened to disfigure my face, beat me to a pulp in our kid’s school’

Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has put an end to the five-year-old wedlock between a woman, Monsurat Oyelade and her husband, Hammed Oyelade.

Monsurat dragged her husband to court on accounts of battery, violence and threat to life. The plaintiff, as a result, prayed the court to put an end to their union and grant her custody of their children. According to her, the defendant forcefully took their first child from her.

Hammed failed to come to court despite being served a court summon twice.

“My lord, my husband’s day was made any time he beat and left me with wounds to nurse. Despite always going out of my way to please him, he never saw any good in whatever I did. Rather than appreciate me, all he did was to complain and dampen my efforts.

“He has no trust in me and always felt threatened seeing my male customers discussing with me; he would accuse me of dating them and made life hell for me.

“He cultivated the habit of going through my call logs and text messages. He eventually seized my phone and refused to return it to me.

“When I demanded for my phone, he threatened to disfigure my face with broken bottle.

“We were living like strangers in the house. He refused that I attended to him. My husband frustrated every move I made at reconciling with him. He eventually threw my belongings out of his house last year and forcefully took custody of our first child.

“He met me in our first child’s school when I went to check his welfare and beat me to a pulp. He also tore my clothes into shreds. He threatened to deal with me anytime and anywhere our path crosses, “the plaintiff stated.

“My lord, I want you to end our marriage and forbid him from harassing, fighting or harming me as he threatened.

“I further pray that you hand over our children to me for adequate care, “she added.

Giving his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade dissolved their marriage and ruled that their children be in the custody of the plaintiff.

The defendant was asked to give their children the sum of N10, 000 per month as their children’s feeding  allowance and be responsible for their general welfare, education and welfare being a priority.
