‘My husband drank himself to stupour, beat me blue black, set my shop ablaze’

A woman, Kafayat Korode, recently dragged her husband, Gbenga Korede before Oja Oba/ Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking that it end their wedlock.

Kafayat had sought for divorce on the accounts of irresponsibility by her husband.

The plaintiff alleged that the defendant failed to live up to expectation as the head of the home and breadwinner.

She explained that her husband was fond of boasting that he was the breadwinner but that he has never given her and their child a dime for food.

According to Kafayat, Gbenga, never believed that it was his responsibility to feed her and their child, but prefers to spend his income on alcohol.

She stated further that her husband would drink himself to stupour every night and stagger home.

Kafayat added that Gbenga done with embarrassing her in their compound and neighbourhood, would beat her to a pulp when he was in his drunken state.

The plaintiff told the court the defendant did the worse when he set her shop ablaze.

Kafayat stated that she had had enough of her husband’s atrocities and therefore pleaded that their union be dissolved.

She also entreated the court to grant her custody of their child because her husband has neglected her enough.

Gbenga refused to come to court after been served court summonses and hearing.

Kafayat in her testimony said, “My lord, I have never derived any joy married to my husband. Rather than be showered with affection and attention, all I get is severe beatings from him.

“My husband loves to be worshipped as the head of the home, but fails to live to expectation.

“Any time we have an argument, he will beat his chest and boast that he is the breadwinner but he never believes in giving me and our child money for food.

“I took up the responsibility of meeting the needs of the home early in our marriage because my husband has never been there.

“Gbenga is a drunk and prefers to spend his income on alcohol rather than take care of his home.

“He embarrasses me and also makes himself a source of ridicule in our compound and neighbourhood because he always gets drunk and will stagger home in the night.

“Gbenga can do anything when in this state. Most times, he will beat me to a pulp and won’t leave me until our neighbours come to my rescue.

“My lord, my husband did the unimaginable when he destroyed my source of livelihood. He set my shop ablaze after we had a fight.

“I’ve had enough of my husband’s atrocities, which was my reason for coming to court this morning.

“I appeal to this court to separate us and grant me custody of our child because he has no time for her,” the plaintiff said.

Giving his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, stated that the defendant’s absence from court after being served summonses showed he was not ready to save his marriage.

Ruling, Odunade dissolved their union and granted custody of their child to the plaintiff.

The defendant was made responsible for their child’s welfare.
