A Grade 1 Area Court in Lugbe, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dissolved the three-year-old marriage between Amina Abubakar and her husband, Jamila Sani, over lack of love and maltreatment.
The judge, Aliyu Kagarko, in his judgment, held that their relationship had broken down irretrievably.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he dissolved their union on the grounds that both parties had lost interest in their marriage and had mutually consented to its dissolution.
“Since both parties have agreed to the dissolution, and the respondent has also supported his wife’s request for divorce, the court grants the petition,” the judge ruled.
Kagarko further ordered Amina to observe Iddah, a three-month waiting period before remarrying, in line with Islamic law.
The petitioner, Amina, in her petition, told the court that she married Sani under Islamic law in 2022, and their union produced a child.
She alleged that her husband maltreated and neglected both her and their child, prompting her decision to seek a divorce.
“We always quarrel over feeding, medication and clothing.
“It is obvious that my husband does not love me,” he said.
Amina further stated that her husband always beat her whenever they had a misunderstanding.
“My husband no longer loves me. I pray the court to dissolve our marriage,” she said.
