‘My husband abandoned me, left me with bloodshot eyes after punching me’

A woman, Taiwo, has told Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, that she is no longer interested in her 23-year-old marriage to her husband, Isaac, whom she accused of lack of care, irresponsibility, physical abuse and abandonment.

Taiwo stated that Isaac was a brute and that he never stopped beating her.

“According to her, he sometimes leaves her with a bloodshot eye and body ache after dealing her heavy punches.

Taiwo also said that he never attended to her needs and that of their children.

According to the plaintiff, the defendant, about three years ago, abandoned her and their children, not leaving a clue as to his whereabouts.

Taiwo begged the court to grant her custody of their only female child, while the other four male children should be handed over to her husband.

She further pleaded that the court mandate her husband to be responsible for their daughter’s welfare,

giving adequate attention to her feeding, education, and health care.

Taiwo, in addition, sought an order restraining her husband from threatening, beating, and interfering with her private life.

Isaac was absent in court despite being served court summonses.

Taiwo, in her testimony, said, “My husband and I met in the church, and we started courting.

“We only held an introduction ceremony before I started living with him.

“He did not pay my bride price.

“I never enjoyed our marriage for a day because my husband is wicked.

“He derived joy in beating me.

“My husband descends on me with punches on a regular basis, thus leaving me sometimes with a bloodshot eye and aching body.

“I once packed my belongings and went back to my parents’ house, but I returned to him after much pleading from his family.

“I thought he was a changed man, only to realise that he had gone worse.

“He beat me without mercy.

“He constantly starved me and our children, and we all looked like a scarecrow.

“He beat the more any time I decided that he was up to his responsibility in the home.

“My husband woke up one faithful morning, packed his belongings, and left home.

“He never left a clue as to his whereabouts.

“I work round the clock to meet our children’s needs, and it is gradually telling on my wellbeing.

“My lord, pray the court to end our marriage and grant me custody of our only female child.

“My husband should please be awarded custody of our other male children.

“I, further appeal that my husband be responsible for our daughter’s upkeep giving feeding, education and health care a priority.

“I again request an order restricting my husband from threatening, beating, and interfering with my life.

The president of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, in her judgment, stated that the defendant was given enough opportunity to defend himself, but that he refused to make use of it.

Akintayo added that the court had no choice but to grant the plaintiff’s her request.

Ruling, Akintayo dissolved their wedlock and granted custody of their daughter to the plaintiff and their sons to the defendant.

“She also gave an order restraining the defendant from threatening, fighting, and interfering with the plaintiff’s private life.
