My cat bit me

Published by

I was recently playing with my cat when he bit me. Kindly let me know if this is dangerous and what I should do.

Cat bites require prompt cleaning, monitoring for infection, and often antibiotics, as they carry a high risk of bacterial infection.

Immediate Wound Care. Wash the bite thoroughly with soap and clean running water for several minutes to remove dirt and bacteria from the wound.

Encourage bleeding by gently squeezing the area to help flush out bacteria. Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream to the bite and cover it with a clean bandage.

Monitor for signs of infection, including redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or increasing pain. Deep puncture wounds or bites from unknown or stray cats require immediate medical evaluation.

High-risk individuals, such as those with diabetes, immunocompromised conditions, or bites on the hands, face, or joints, should see a doctor promptly.

Signs of infection like spreading redness, fever, or lymph node swelling necessitate urgent care.

Prophylactic antibiotics are often advised because 30–50% of cat bites can become infected.

Intravenous antibiotics may be required for severe infections or hospitalised patients.

Tetanus vaccination: Ensure your tetanus booster is up to date, as puncture wounds can harbour tetanus spores.

Rabies risk: If bitten by a stray or unvaccinated cat, rabies post-exposure prophylaxis may be necessary.

Follow-up care: Keep the wound clean, change dressings regularly, and watch for worsening symptoms. Severe infections may require hospitalisation and surgical intervention. Prompt and proper care of cat bites is crucial to prevent serious complications, as infections can develop quickly and, in rare cases, become life-threatening.
