MWUN denounces merchant seafarers association

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has denounced the Merchant Seafarers Association of Nigeria over claims that the recently signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) does not cover seafarers in the country, stating that the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association headed by Matthew Alalade is the body recognised to represent seafarers in Nigeria.

It will be recalled that the Merchant Seafarers Association of Nigeria had rejected the CBA agreement signed by the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) to review the wages and welfare of seafarers in the country.

Speaking to Nigerian Tribune exclusively in Lagos, President-General of MWUN, Adewale Adeyanju stated that the Merchant Seafarers Association of Nigeria was not recognised to represent seafarers in the country.

According to Adeyanju, “the group that is recognised all over the country is the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers & Water Transport Senior Staff Association, headed by Comrade Matthew Alalade. Any other group coming up after we have signed the CBA is not known to us.

“The CBA that we have put in place is a landmark achievement. The people that are rejecting it are noisemakers. The government signed the CBA in the presence of MWUN and the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association, Comrade Matthew Alalade.

“I signed on behalf of MWUN, and Alalade signed on behalf of the merchant navy. We cannot have different groups claiming to represent seafarers in Nigeria. The recognised group on behalf of seafarers with government is the one headed by Alalade.”

The Merchant Seafarers Association of Nigeria, through its Secretary General, Captain Alfred Oniye, had told newsmen that the seafarers were not represented or consulted in the process that led to the signing of the CBA agreement, hence the agreement was not implementable.
