MWAN offers medical services to 200, renovates PHC in Ibadan

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has offered various free medical services, including dental care and reading glasses to over 200 less privileged individuals and renovated the Akaran Primary Health care centre, in Ibadan.

The medical outreach was part of activities to flag the association’s 12th Biennial Delegates Meeting 2021, with the theme “leadership and Governance and Women’s Health” and to partner with the government to better meet health needs of people at the grassroots.

MWAN’s Current National president, Dr Adekemi Otolorin said the outreach was based on more need to help people, the less privileged, those who needed medical infrastructure since the government alone cannot do it all.

She declared: “the elitists are enjoying the Ilaji sports centre, so we decided to give the people they pass through in Oran ara local government a chance to have good health facility, information on the COVID-19 pandemic, improve their eyesight, give treatment for different medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension and so on because health is wealth.

“After leaving here, we are going to Aba emu PHC. The PHC in Aba emu needs care and needs the government. That four men had to carry a pregnant woman from the road to this PHC located in a valley to deliver at the facility in this 21st century is not right.

“They have not found a willing Nigerian or government to relocate this PHC that has 45 deliveries every month, 130 outpatient pregnant women and over 150 children every week. They really need help.”

Dr Otolorin, therefore, called for functional PHCs across the country to increase access to health care services at the grassroots and decongest secondary and tertiary health care centres.

She said: “there is no point for people in the suburban and rural areas to be rushing to the secondary and tertiary health facility if the PHCs have adequate infrastructure, manpower, resources and materials as well as good supervision. The PHCs bear the burden of lack of infrastructure.”

Chairman Ona-Ara Local government, Honourable Musibau Adesina said the turnout was indicative that people in the area value and need good health and called for increased support from the government to improve PHCs across the country.
