My music career has leaped since I got to US —Sossi

BRG star, Sossi is famous with his voice and hit singles that his fans have come to know him for. The singer, whose new single and visuals, Give You is already ruling the airwaves, speaks with SEGUN ADEBAYO, about his music career and what people should expect from him.

You have been away for some time and questions have been asked about your whereabouts. Where have you been hiding and what took you away?

That’s a funny question and I didn’t see that coming. I haven’t been away. I have been putting in work and this is evident in the way people have been talking about my new single Give you. We have been working on the record label, doing  the promotion of a couple of songs that we will be released in a matter time.
At a time, things were not within my control, so I had to take a chill pill to work on some areas of my life that needed much attention just like my career I was also getting better at my craft, not just as an artiste but as a better individual and citizen of Nigeria. I have equally been building relations and working day and night on how to better understand the industry and how it works. Basically, I have been very busy with my work. This is my career and I have to make sure every moment count.

Some people said you left the country at a time your career was gathering momentum. You had just dropped your popular single, Bamidele, at that time and your name was everywhere. Do you think leaving Nigeria was a wise decision?

Please, permit me to ask who are these people? As far as I’m concerned, I was simply building momentum from my previously released singles Sebee remix with Olamide and Oritsefemi; Kalikatumi produced by Dj Coublon, and Bamidele, by Smooth Kiss, and now Give You, produced by Mickey G. So, that’s what I have been doing. I have been leveraging on the successes of my songs and trying to put out more work. The only thing that matters to me now is to push my music to new levels and build my fan base.

How has life been in the US, and what special thing do you think your trip abroad has added to your career?

It has impacted my career in a positive way. It exposed me to the importance of working with the right people and making the right decisions the first time. It opened my eyes to the benefits of working with people from different cultures. For example, the video I shot in Brooklyn, New York for my new single, Give You, was produced by a director from Puerto Rico; our models are from the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Myself and project manager are Nigerians. Having all of those different perspectives made this come to life and make it relatable to a lot of people. It showed me that music is really a universal language and the (music) industry is so diverse. In short, it showed me that, like the saying there are different routes that lead to the market place.

Would you say your music career has leaped since you left Nigeria?

The response has actually been global. It has given me more exposure and expanded my name and I have been getting hits and write ups from Sweden, Slovakia, Germany, U.K., US and  media houses in Nigeria. This response is something I plan on build to by dropping more materials and pushing my songs further.

Going by what you have said, will you say your career has come of age?

I’m positive because from the look of things, I’m already breaking new grounds with the new single Give you and I just want to ‘capitalise’ on the new experience and growth.

How supportive has your record label, Bugatti Records Group, (BRG) been since you left for the US? There were news that things had gone bad between you and your owners. Is this true?

BRG has been somewhat supportive since my move. The news that things have gone bad between the label owners and myself is far-fetched. Like every normal business, clash of ideas is a major factor. However, the key to success is compromising on all fronts which is the situation now.

When people were expecting Bamidele video, you dropped Give You. Don’t you think you are confusing your fans by changing what they expected?

Give You was released not to confuse the fans but to increase their anticipation for the subsequent releases. Something big might also be in the works as regards Bamidele. Good music never dies, remember.

What do you think is the next thing for you?

My career is at the level of growth, meaning that there is a lot more to come; I mean Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, people should expect more materials, promotions, collaborations, and a whole lot more engagement from myself and fans (both new and legendary Sossians).I’m very excited and I can’t wait to keep this momentum going.

There was also a report that you dumped your former handlers, XS promo, could you let us know what went wrong and the state of things now?

Business doesn’t move forward if every party involved defaults as regards responsibilities. This was this case here.
