Mother, child burnt to death, as petrol tanker explodes in Onitsha

A mother and her child were burnt to death on Wednesday afternoon, in Onitsha in a fuel tanker explosion.

Tribune Online gathered that the fuel tanker fully loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) exploded at Upper Iweka Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was also gathered that the tanker lost control and fell inside the drainage channel at MCC bus stop near Toronto Hospital, Upper-Iweka, the commercial city.

At about 5:24 p.m., the flowing petrol from the tanker which passed through drainage channels also burnt many houses including petrol stations located around the affected areas.

The fire caused serious tension and confusion as passengers, motorists and passersby ran for dear lives

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Mohammed Haruna, said the state police commissioner, Mr John Bassey Abang, had just visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment to ascertaining the extent of the damage.
