Mother beats, injures daughter with red-hot iron for allegedly stealing N250

A 30-year-old woman, Sheriff Ayo, who allegedly beat her daughter and injured her with red-hot pressing iron for allegedly stealing N250, was on Monday hauled up before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Although the accused denied committing the offence, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, remanded her in Kirikiri Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Ayo, who resides at Sobodun Street, Orile-Iganmu, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and assault occasioning harm.

The accused, according to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, after beating her 16-year-old daughter to a pulp, then burnt her upper and lower limbs with a hot pressing iron.

Emuerhi told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 24 at her residence.

“The accused was, however, arrested by the Police following a tip-off from the Chosen Child Orphanage (the complainant) that they should rescue the victim who was being abused by her mother.

“The accused said she beat and burnt her with hot pressing iron claiming she stole N250.”

The offences contravened Sections 172 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to two years imprisonment, according to Section 172 of the Criminal Law.

The case was adjourned until May 23 for the mention.
