‘Money marriage’ tradition no longer exist in Belegete community — Cross River gov’s wife

The Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Rev. (Mrs.) Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, says the practice of giving out young girls to settle financial debt otherwise known as “money marriage” in Belegete community of the state was an old-age practice that has been abolished.

Tribune Online gathered that the Governor’s Wife, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, conducted a comprehensive fact-finding mission in August 2023 to investigate the status of this ancient tradition.

In a press release dated January 30, 2024 issued by her Press Secretary, Faith Okon, it was revealed that the tradition of “money marriage” in the Belegete community was no longer sustainable and was canceled after extensive consultation and engagement with community leaders and members.

Following the findings, Rev. (Mrs) Otu kick-started plans to empower the victims of this unfortunate practice.

She urged members of the society to completely ignore the video circulating on social media, stressing that it does not represent the current situation of the Belegete community. 

Eyoanwan Bassey Otu expressed her commitment to ensuring the elimination of harmful traditional practices and restoring the dignity and rights of individuals, especially women and girls across the state. 

She encouraged everyone to respect the community’s new way of life and stand in solidarity with the Belegete community as it continues its journey towards progress and positive change.
