It is no longer news that the international Ponzi scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, popularly known as MMM, appears to have hit troubled waters.
Lagosians have promptly (and perhaps rightly) changed the name of the scheme to “Moku Mogbe Modaran”, which is what a Yoruba person would yell if they were to say “I am done for”.
As this short report was being pieced together, Eko Akete had already got wind of different families that are currently in trouble as a result of the scheme.
Thank God there has been no report of people committing suicide as a result of the nebulous scheme (and hopefully there won’t be any), information reaching Eko Akete indicates that all is not well with many families.
For example, how does one explain a situation whereby a wife took the family money meant for putting things in place for a new baby the family is expecting in a few weeks, and poured it into MMM? Now, the money is trapped but the baby is in a hurry to arrive.
In another instance, it was the man of the house who virtually emptied the family’s account, including his wife’s sales money, and poured everything into MMM. Now, he cannot even look his wife in the eye anymore, and his ration has dropped significantly.
While Eko Akete commiserates with everyone who has any amount trapped in the scheme, it is Eko Akete’s prayers that such calamity will not rise again.
