The Head of Service in Ondo State, Mr John Adeyemo, on Monday assured workers in the state that the state would soon exit the era of modulated salary saying the government is working out modalities to clear the arrears and ensure full payment of salary of the subsequent months in due course.
Adeyemo who stated this during a press conference to herald this year Public Service Day celebration in the state, said the amount payable to the state workers every month is being determined by the allocation from the centre.
He attributed the payment of percentage salaries to the inadequate allocation received from the federation account, occasioned by the economic reality and COVID-19 pandemic.
He explained that the state government usually sit down with the leadership of labour after receiving allocation to take decisions on how to allocate money for workers salary.
He said the amount payable at the end of each month depends on the allocation from the Federal Government and this is with the understanding of the labour leaders in the state.
Adeyemo however, noted that the allocation is not always enough to pay full salary for a month but enjoined all Public Servants to continue to bear with the government at this critical time of hard economic reality.
Adeyemo said ” l want to clarify this issue of salary payment. The government of Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu is not paying the workers half salary. The percentage payment came into being because of the COVID – 19 pandemics.
” That’s is not true. What this government does every month as we receive an allocation from the Federation Account is to sit down with the labour union leaders in the state to decide jointly how to distribute what was received.
“lt is what comes to the state that we pay to all workers including tertiary institutions. There was a time 170 per cent was paid to workers. The amount payable each month depends on what the state received with the understanding of our workforce.
“lf 70 per cent was paid last month, the balance of 30% would be paid the following month.
“You will recall that this Administration inherited seven-month unpaid salaries and allowances. Within a space of about 2 years, the salary backlogs are almost completely cleared, leaving only a month.”
Adeyemo while speaking on the anniversary theme for this year, “Deploying Technology to sustain and enhance Service Delivery in the face of challenging Covid-19 Pandemic Climate.” said despite the economic downturn, no fewer than 1200 workers had been recruited into the state service with 6,106 workers promoted recently.
Speaking on the two-day programme, the HoS said ” On the first day, the Head of Service would interface with a cross-section of the Service at Adegbemile Cultural Centre. The meeting is segmented into two: officers on grade level 12 and above as the first batch, while officers on Grade Level 10 and below would then take their turn.
“The meetings will offer an opportunity for the rank and file to ask questions and make contributions on how to improve on the State Bureaucracy. I consider this very germane because no lasting improvement on any system can be achieved if the operators sing discordant tones.
“I intend to deploy the platform to further secure the buy-in of Public Servants on the need to improve on service delivery and improved ethical values, beginning with a change in attitude and orientation.
“If we get our values and orientations right, the rest will fall in place and we will evolve the Service of our dream, bringing back the golden era of distinguished professional service.”
