Miracles of Holy Prophet Muhammad

IN the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

The Holy Qur’an, Baqarah 2:118-119 says about miracles: “Say those without knowledge: ‘Why speaketh not God unto Us? Or why cometh not unto us a sign?’ So said the people before them words of similar import. Their hearts are alike. We have indeed made clear the signs unto any people who hold firmly to faith (in their hearts). Verily We have sent thee in truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. But of thee no question shall be asked of companions of the blazing fire”.

In the world of abracadabra, man lives in the fantasy of magical word. They are moved by spoken words that produce unusual objects from unrelated objects. They are carried away by the emergence of an odd matter from an even object.

The covetous nature of man makes them participate in the game of chance in magical competitions. Man is indeed pattered by the outcome of magical exploits with the production of edibles from unrelated family objects. And of course, man is moved into believing the sophist magical power of magicians and, in fact, regard them as agents of God, or gods themselves.

Whereas magic is a ceremonial nonsense without meaning, it is meant to excite man through falsehood. It is borne out of human passion to fool one another for financial gains. It is being carried out to play on human intelligence for self-aggrandisement.

But magic differs from miracle. The black magic is surely full of intrigues, tricks, evil, and in fact typifies illusion. It is a worldly power that is part of African religions as found in the old Egypt and, of course, Nigeria.

Although miracles are unusual happenings like magic, they are methods by which the true powers of God are shown to the disbelievers. The true believers do not need any signs from God to believe in Him. It is the wicked generation that asks for Signs and miracles. They are not vouchsafed. But where they are, there are God’s miracles around us daily like the sun, the moon, the stars, the day, the night, the living, the dead, the wet season, the dry season, the harmattan, the spring, the winter.

The Holy Qur’an, Yasin 36:33-50 attests: “A sign for them is the earth that is dead, We do give it life, and produce grain therefrom, of which ye do eat. And We produce therein orchards with date-palms and vines, and We cause springs to gush forth therein that they may enjoy the fruits of this (artistry). It was not their hands that made this. Will they not then give thanks? Glory to God Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge. And a sign for them is the night We withdraw therefrom the day. And behold they are plunged in darkness and the sun runs his course for a period determined for him. And the moon, We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk. It is not permitted to the sun to catch up the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law). And a sign for them is that We bore their race (through the flood) in the loaded ark. And We have created for them similar (vessels) on which they ride. If it were Our Will, We could drown them. Then would there be no helper (to hear their cry), nor could they be delivered except by way of mercy from Us and by way of (worldly) convenience (to serve them) for a time. When they are told, ‘fear ye that which is before you and that which will be after you, in order that ye may receive mercy’, (they turn back). Not a sign comes to them from among the signs of their Lord, but they turn away therefrom. And when they are told, ‘Spend ye of (the bounties) with which God has provided you’, the unbelievers say to those who believe, ‘Shall we then feed those whom, if God had so willed, He would have fed (himself)?’ Ye are in nothing but manifest error. Further, they say, ‘When will this promise (come to pass) if what ye say is true?’ They will not (have to) wait for aught but a single blast. It will seize them while they are yet disputing among themselves! No (chance) will they then have, by will, to dispose (of their affairs), nor to return to their own people!”

What of the creation of living and non-living things in pairs; the nature of the heavens and the earth; the giving of life to the dead earth through the rains; the production of grains, fruits and vines from a single grain (Qur’an 41:39-40; 51:20-23).

The Holy Qur’an, Waqi’a, 56:57-74 confirms: “It is We Who have created you, why will ye not witness the truth? Do ye then see? The (human seed) that ye throw out, is it ye who create it, or are We the creators? We have decreed death to be your common lot, And We are not to be frustrated from changing your forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. And ye certainly know already the first form of creation. Why then do ye not celebrate His praises? See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? Were it Our will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment (saying), ‘We are indeed left with debts (for nothing). Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour). See ye the water which ye drink? Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? Were it Our will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable). Then why do ye not give thanks? See ye the fire which ye kindle? Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, The Supreme!”

The mysteries of life are also reflected in the ships and the modes of transport on road, rail, and air by which man conquers the forces around him with God given gifts.  They all operate in their orbits by law and in harmony. They all bear witness to the existence of God as the Creator and Controller of heavens and the earth (Qur’an 30:46; 42:32-35; 88:17-20; 89:1-5).

The Holy Qur’an, Luqman 31:31-32 affirms: “Seest thou not that the ships sail through the ocean by the grace Of God? That he may show you of His signs? Verily in this are signs for all who constantly persevere and give thanks. When a wave covers them like the canopy (of clouds), they call to God, offering Him sincere devotion. But when He has delivered them safely to land, there are among them those that halt between (right and wrong). But none reject Our signs except only a perfidious ungrateful (wretch)!”

May Almighty Allah guide us aright with His mercy to strengthen our faith in Him without looking for any miracle (mujiza through Prophets) or Karama from Sheikhs and ‘Ulama.
