Ministers receive less than N1m as monthly salary — Bagudu

Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, disclosed on Saturday that ministers earn less than N1 million in monthly salary.

Bagudu made this revelation during an interview on Channels Television, addressing questions about ministers’ salaries, Bagudu explained that the figures are set by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

“Ministers, like all public officials, have their salaries determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission,” Bagudu stated. “As a minister, I earn less than a million naira per month.”

He also shared insights into his personal practices, noting that he has one official vehicle which he seldom uses, opting instead to drive his own Toyota Camry. “As the Minister of Budget, I want to lead by example,” he said.

When asked about allowances, Bagudu admitted uncertainty, saying, “I don’t know of any specific allowances for ministers, but I could be mistaken.”

He assured that all compensation details are published and determined by RMFAC, emphasizing that there are no additional perks beyond what is officially documented.

Bagudu acknowledged concerns about the cost of governance, expressing his awareness of the country’s financial allocations and the “worrisome” nature of the situation.
