Ministerial nominees: Senate assures Nigerians of thorough, expeditious screening

Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, has assured Nigerians that the upper legislative chamber would conduct rigorous screening of ministerial nominees that would form the Federal Executive Council of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration once it received the list.

Adaramodu gave the assurance at the weekend while speaking with Tribune Online in a telephone interview.

Nigerians have since expressed strong reservations over the perceived tardiness on the part of the Presidency in the speedy dispatch of the nominees.

Investigation revealed that the lawmakers expected to proceed on annual vacation this week may have resolved to put it on hold to screen the ministerial nominees, as the Presidency may forward the much-expected list, this week.

By virtue of provisions of a new amendment to the 1999 Constitution, the President and governors must submit the names of persons nominated as ministers or commissioners within 60 days of taking the oath of office for confirmation by the Senate or state House of Assembly.

The Senator representing Ekiti South said there was enough time to screen the nominees as he noted that the Presidency was still within what he called the Constitutional cover.

The Senate spokesperson who could not confirm if the Senate leadership has received the list maintained that the Senate would not disappoint Nigerians as it would do a thorough and expeditious screening.

He said:” I have reiterated severally and for the umpteenth time that there is still enough time to receive and screen Ministerial nominees. We know that Nigerians are eager to behold the Executive team that will breathe oxygen into our economy and make life more abundant for us all.

“We are unarguably within the Constitutional cover. The Senate shall surely do the needful and won’t disappoint Nigerians.”
