Middle-Belt group to Tinubu: Don’t review oil pipeline surveillance contracts

The Middle-Belt Pan Nigerian Forum has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to disregard the baseless and ill-advised calls made in certain quarters, calling for the review of oil pipeline surveillance contracts awarded to militants and non-state actors.

The group stated that these contracts have been instrumental in safeguarding the integrity of the nation’s oil pipelines and preventing destructive acts of vandalism.

In a statement released to the press by its spokesman, Dr. Danladi Ceceko Dangana, the forum emphasises that the demands put forth by these unidentified groups in Lagos are intended to undermine the significant progress achieved by the Federal Government in its tireless efforts to protect our valuable national assets and oil facilities through the implementation of these vital surveillance contracts.

It would be recalled that a coalition of civil society groups had recently issued a statement, urging President Tinubu’s administration to refrain from awarding surveillance contracts to companies led by individuals with questionable reputations. One such company highlighted by the coalition is Tantita Ltd, owned by Mr Government Ekpemupolo, commonly known as Tompolo, a former militant. They argued that entrusting pipeline security to individuals with militant backgrounds jeopardizes Nigeria’s sovereignty and national security.

In response to the coalition’s statement, the Middle-Belt Pan Nigerian Forum asserted that President Tinubu’s decision to award oil pipeline contracts is not an act of benevolence towards the Niger Delta region, but rather a strategic move to protect Nigeria’s invaluable oil assets.

“It is an undeniable fact that President Tinubu is utilising his authority and resources to ensure the safeguarding of our oil assets,” it said.

The group also warned the coalition against meddling in matters that do not concern them, emphasising that their interference is unwarranted and mischievous.

” Middle-Belt Pan Nigerian Forum firmly stands by President Tinubu, extending its heartfelt gratitude for his commitment to protecting our national assets, which has undoubtedly resulted in increased crude oil production and economic prosperity for our great nation.

“Those responsible for oil bunkering, pipeline vandalisation, and other illicit activities in the Niger Delta are the ones hell-bent on ensuring that the Federal Government reviews the surveillance contracts. Their aim is to make our oil facilities porous so they can have a field day in siphoning crude oil.

“The Middle-Belt Pan Nigerian Forum urges President Tinubu to remain resolute and steadfast in his support of the oil pipeline surveillance contracts, recognising their indispensable role in fortifying the security of Nigeria’s oil infrastructure and preserving the country’s sovereignty.

“The group reiterates its support for President Tinubu’s visionary leadership and his unyielding dedication to the protection of Nigeria’s vital resources,” it added.
