Not fewer than 400,000 children, ages 9 – 15 months, in Bauchi State are to be vaccinated to prevent them from measles outbreak as well as to boost their immune system.
The disclosure was made by the Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed,, while flagging off the one-week routine immunisation in the state on Monday.
During the flagging off held at the Bayan Fada PHC in Bauchi metropolis, Rilwanu Mohammed explained that the first dose of the vaccine is to be given when the child is 9 months old while the second dose is 4 months later when the child will be 1year 3 months old.
He further explained that a new vaccine known as booster has been introduced by the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NAPHCDA) aimed at helping to boost the immune system of the children urging the mothers to ensure that their children received the vaccine.
The BASPHCDA Chairman said that during the one week exercise, health workers will go round the state to do the vaccination not only in the fix centres but other centres which are up to 525 across the state.
He stressed that “taking the vaccine does not mean that the child is immune from measles attack but it will be mild because the booster vaccine will build up the immune system in the child.”

Rilwanu Mohammed, however, told the women that their refusal to bring out their children for the vaccination may cause problems for the children including deafness, blindness and even death.
Earlier during a press briefing to introduce the new measles vaccine booster, Rilwanu Mohammed commended the NAPHCDA for always coming to the aid of the state by promptly supplying vaccine for the child killer diseases.
He said that the NAPHCDA in its deter to curb the outbreak of measles went into research and came out with the vaccine booster which he is very effective in boosting the immune system of the children assuring that his Agency will not joke with the move of giving the vaccine to the children across the state.
Rilwanu Mohammed then said that the media will be used effectively to educate, sensitise and mobilize women to bring out their children for the exercise.
