May Day: Workers still receive N7,000 in Zamfara – NLC tells Gov

The Zamfara State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has made a heartfelt plea to Governor Dauda Lawal to implement a minimum wage, citing the dire situation where workers in the state receive a monthly salary as low as N7,000, an anomaly not seen elsewhere in the country.

This plea was made during the 2024 May Day celebration by the Zamfara State NLC chairperson, Comrade Sani Haliru Kurya.

Comrade Kurya emphasized that the meagre earnings of workers in Zamfara are insufficient, particularly in light of the prevailing economic challenges across the nation.

He urged Governor Dauda Lawal to urgently consider the feasibility of increasing workers’ salaries in the state.

According to him, workers in the state are facing some critical challenges that include delay in promotion, non implementation of minimum wage to local government staff and compulsory retirement of workers among other issues in the state, “we want the Governor to look back again”. He urged.

“Local government Workers are far behind, in the whole of Nigeria only in Zamfara state local government workers received N7,000 monthly salary,” he lamented.

The Zamfara NLC chairperson applauded the efforts of Governor Dauda Lawal on the developmental projects going on in the state despite economic challenges.

He further commended the state Governor for given much attention to civil servants in the state.

Also, the Zamfara state Trade Union Congress (TUC) chairman Comrade Saidu Mudi said if all our leaders can wake up from their slumber, our country would be much better.

He called on the state Governor to implement wage allowance to workers in the state,” part of our lingering crisis was that of non-implementation of N30,000 minimum wage and non-implementation of wages allowance in the state”. He further disclosed.

In his address, Governor Dauda Lawal said workers and government are partners in progress,” we’ll continue to explore more ways to better the living standard of workers in the state”.

On the issue of compulsory retirement, Governor Dauda Lawal said ” Workers have no fear of retire,as their pension and gratuity were paid as at when due”.

He gave his assurance to workers in the state saying” Very soon I will come up with some surprises,I don’t make empty promise”.
