Many feared dead, eight vehicles burnt in Enugu-Onitsha expressway tanker explosion

A fuel-laden tanker explosion at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, on Saturday, left many commuters feared dead and eight vehicles completely burnt.

Chief Okwudili Ohaa, Director of the Enugu State Fire Service, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ohaa stated that the fire lasted over an hour before the firefighters from the service could manage to extinguish the flames.

While the exact number of fatalities remains uncertain, Ohaa mentioned that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and other security agencies are working to evacuate the charred remains of the victims.

He further disclosed that at least eight vehicles were burnt in the inferno, and numerous road users, who fled for safety, are believed to have sustained injuries.

“The tanker, which was suspected to be carrying petroleum, fell and exploded at approximately 11:30 a.m. Our firefighting team from the 9th Mile Station responded immediately but was overwhelmed by the magnitude of the fire.

I had to send for reinforcements from the Ogui Road and Government House Fire Stations to support the 9th Mile team.

“It took the combined efforts of 10 skilled firefighters to control the flames before paramilitary personnel arrived to evacuate the bodies and transport the injured to nearby hospitals,” he added.

The Chief Fire Officer also expressed gratitude to members of the public for promptly alerting the fire service.

Eyewitnesses described the tanker explosion as catastrophic, with nearby vehicles destroyed and widespread panic among road users.

They reported that initial rescue attempts were hindered by thick, choking smoke, making it nearly impossible for bystanders to approach the scene until the fire was brought under control.

Some victims and vehicles were reportedly burnt beyond recognition in the blaze.
