Tragedy struck in Boji Boji Agbor in Ika south of Delta state on Sunday when a tanker laden with fuel exploded with several persons feared dead and many houses and vehicles razed down.
Tribune Online reports that the incident occurred in the afternoon along the commercial nerve centre of the Old Lagos/Asaba Road by a traffic light while the driver of the tanker was making a U-turn.
The tanker was said to have fallen as the driver lost control, resulting in the explosion which spread fire to the neighbourhood.
Firemen from both Delta state and federal authorities were mobilised to the scene.
Director of the state fire services, Eugene Oziwele who confirmed the story said the casualties were much adding that firemen from Asaba joined those in Agbor with others from the federal fire service to put off the raging inferno.
Oziwele said, “You know Agbor is a sloppy place, as the spilt fuel was flowing, the fire was spreading.
“If you ask how many lives were lost, I don’t know but one is that the casualties were much.”
