A 29-year-old man, Oladele Oladiran, who allegedly conspired with one other person at large to beat up a motorcyclist and steal N15,000 from him, was on Tuesday brought before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The defendant, who resides at Ajegunle area of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Friday Inedu told the court that the defendant committed the offences on April 2, at Oregie Road, Ajegunle, Lagos.
Inedu said that the defendant and his accomplice conspired to beat up the complainant, one Mr Mohammed Sufianu, and steal his money.
“Sufianu said that he was riding his commercial motorcycle along Oregie Road when the defendant and his accomplice stopped him and requested to be carried to a particular area in Ajegunle.
“The complainant said that the defendant and his friend told him to stop the bike in transit at a secluded area, and immediately he did so, they beat him up and took his money,” he said.
Inedu said that Sufianu raised the alarm and Oladiran was apprehended by some people around the area, while his accomplice escaped.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 173, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 173 also stipulates a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.
The Magistrate, Mr T.O Babalola, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Babalola adjourned the case until June 3, for mention.
