THE police on Tuesday arraigned a 26-year-old man, Afeez Adekanmbi, in an Ogudu Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing two cell phones valued at N40,000.
Adekanmbi, a resident of Ajibola Street, Alapere, pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov 7 at Ogudu Road and on Dec. 7 at Ramat, Ogudu GRA, in Lagos.
Ihiehie said that one of the complainants, Jolasun Oyekunle, told the police that the accused pretended to be an engineer and was called to set up musical equipment for their end of the year party at Ramat Ogudu GRA.
He said that Oyekunle had given his Infinix cell phone to his co-teacher to keep, but the accused collected it with the pretense of playing music and ran away with it.
Ihiehie said that the accused was, however, caught.
The prosecutor said that the accused had earlier stolen a Gionee P5 phone on Nov 7 at Ogudu Road from one Mr Chinedu Uzor at God is Able Evangelical Church when he assisted Uzor to fix their band stand.
He said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term on conviction.
The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted Adekanmbi bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Kubeinje adjourned the case until Jan 23, 2019, for mention.
