Man docked for allegedly impersonating as BEDC staff in Ekiti

The police have arraigned a 39-year-old man (name withheld) before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court over alleged fraud and impersonating.

The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial that borders on fraud.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in the month of November 2018 at about 7:00 p.m at Ilokun in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant obtained N130,000 from one Mr Makinde Hammed, N90,000 from Mrs Olowoyo Rachael and 72,000 from Mr Makinde Peter, on the pretext of selling a prepaid metre for them.

He also alleged that the defendant impersonates himself to be a staff of Benin Electricity Distribution Company.

Apata noted that the offences contravened section 419 and 108 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

His counsel, Mr Timi Omotosho, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Awosika said one of the sureties must be a level 10 officer of the Ekiti State Government.

She adjourned the case until March 2 for hearing.
