A nomad, simply identified as Ali, has been arrested by men of the Kwara state Police Command for the alleged killing of a yam farmer, Mallam Ahmadu, in Labaka-Oja, Ifelodun local government area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred last Sunday, according to sources.
The spokesperson of the state police command, Ejire Adeyemi-Adetoun, confirmed the arrest of the suspect on Tuesday.
She mentioned that the suspect has confessed to the crime and will be prosecuted accordingly.
The Nigerian Tribune gathered that a disagreement between the suspect and the deceased arose over some harvested tubers of yams.
Sources in the area revealed that the deceased was called on the phone on Sunday and went into the bush but never returned.
“When we continued the search the next day (Monday), we found his corpse at the same spot where we had recovered his motorbike a day earlier, badly macheted,” a source said.
The traditional ruler of Labaka-Oja, Oba Kazeem Irewolede, confirmed the incident.
He stated that a disagreement about harvested yams led to the unfortunate incident.
“The deceased, we discovered, once caught the suspect harvesting some yams in his farm, apprehended him, and collected money from him in the process, which led to their disagreement.”
The monarch mentioned that the suspect has been handed over to the police at the Oke-Ode Division.
