Man, 41, docked over alleged N7.5m fraud

A 41-year-old man, Godwin Ali, was on Thursday in Sango-Ota, arraigned at a Chief Magistrates’ Court over a fraud of N7.5 million.

Ali, who lives at 14 Oguntunde St., Iyana-Ilogbo, Ota, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and obtaining money under false pretences.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 16, 2017, at about 11.30 a.m. in Sango-Ota.

Mustapha said that the defendant collected N7.5 million under pretences from the complainant, one Nuru Mohammed, to supply Aluminium doors.

“The defendant converted the money to personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement between the two parties,” he said.

According to him, the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 419(1) (a) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Mathew Akinyemi, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

Akinyemi also ordered that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

He adjourned the case until Feb. 28 for further hearing.
