Man, 34, docked for allegedly stealing car worth N2m

A 34-year-old man, Joseph Akpan, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a Toyota car worth N2 million.

Akpan, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Christopher John, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others still at large on Dec.15, 2018 at Dalemo area of Alakuko, Lagos.

John said the defendant stole the car with registration No. SMK-384 EH belonging to Mr Ibrahim Kolayemi.

“The defendant hired the complainant, who is a cab driver, to take him to Ijebu-Ode for a party.

“At the venue of the party, the defendant gave the complainant some drinks, which he drank and slept off,” the prosecutor said.

He said that the defendant drove the car to Akwa Ibom where he disposed of it, but was later tracked and arrested by the police.

John said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three-year jail term for stealing upon conviction.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.E. Nwaka, granted the defendant bail of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Nwaka adjourned the case until March 18 for mention.
