Making a name for myself didn’t come easy —DJ SJS

Published by

What prompted you to become a Disk Jockey?

I am a music lover with a huge passion for music, although, I started out as a drummer. I actually became a DJ in 2005, but took it as a career in 2009. That is 10 years now. The experience has been great thus far and I thank God for the grace and success story. I started this career in Ago- Okota, Lagos State in various bars, event centres and shows. I would gladly say everyone in the community were very supportive, especially in terms of my raw talent. Making a name for myself didn’t come easy and I didn’t give up at the same time in putting out the best to sell the brand.

Why a DJ and not an artiste?

As a DJ, there are so many opportunities, and so many great things to achieve. I would still want to be a DJ in my next life. My expertise has opened several doors for me and I believe that my best is yet to come. I have won several awards in this field of profession, especially on social media and I would say it has helped in building my fan base, as well as taken me to places. I was recently endorsed as an ambassador for Premium Tasty Shawarma. I also emerged as Cool FM’s official DJ through an online contest. This development has given my career a boost. I play every Fridays and Saturdays on the PartyClubMix programme. I have always wanted to be a radio DJ all my life and I thank God that it has become a reality. I would say, I am embracing my new job as a radio DJ with both decks.

As a DJ, what is your assessment of the upcoming and established artistes?

There should be no basis for comparism between them, they are all artistes. Grace, however, differentiate them. Being united and having a sense of belonging help open doors for the younger ones, as well as enhance the progress of the industry.

How can one identify a professional DJ?

It is through his or her uniqueness, ambience and the ability to thrill people with vibes always.

I have been in this industry for five years and I have been able to carve a niche for myself in the industry. I learn from the elders and also tried to create my own brand. Personally, one of the uniqueness that stands me out is my individual musical identity of using Rnb, Hip-Hop, Pop, Afrobeat, Funky Urban House, featuring them in my own creative wheel sounds. Also, my music policy, dress sense, attitude and sense of belonging has make me grow.

How was your growing up like?

I am the last of a family of six; two senior sisters and one elder brother and our parents.

What are your aspirations?

I am really aspiring to become great in this profession. This is why I am working so hard to create my brand. I want to become one of the best DJ’s across the globe.

Do you think being a DJ is a lucrative job in Nigeria?

Yes, it is, as long as one is creative.

Do you really agree that pleasure shouldn’t be mixed with work?

Like I used to tell people around me, if it’s time for work let’s work, if its time to hit the club and flex it’s another thing entirely. I don’t mix work with pleasure.

What should your fans expect from you in the second half of the year?

I have been hitting the studio lately getting my own personal sound, and good vibes, so I would be releasing some music with prolific raves.
