Makinde seeks Assembly’s approval for LG commission

The Oyo State House of Assembly will next Tuesday screen for confirmation the five nominees to make up the state local government commission.

This development follows a request by Governor Seyi Makinde for the Assembly’s confirmation of the nominees in a letter read at Tuesday’s plenary.

Those nominated are Mr Remi Ayodele as Chairman while Mr Oyesina Oyedeji, Mr John Adisa, Mr Oke Taiwo and Mrs Nike Arewa are to serve as members.

Also at the plenary, lawmakers decried the lack of severe sanctions and punishments for paedophiles.

The lawmakers, deliberating on the motion by Honourable Wumi Oladeji of Ogbomoso North constituency, bemoaned the usual failure of parents of victims to report the abuse of minors fuelled unabated instances of paedophilia.

Contributing to the discourse, Honourable Seyi Adisa of Afijio state constituency urged the executive arm to see to the state having dedicated lines where victims of child sexual abuse could report anonymously.

Honourable Owolabi Olusola of Ibadan North East 2 constituency, on his part, said such paedophiles should, upon arrest, be subjected to mental checkup.

The Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin led Assembly, particularly, called on the executive arm and relevant stakeholders to engage in awareness and sensitisation aimed at educating the citizenry on the menace of paedophilia.

In addition, the Assembly stressed that the stakeholders should engage in sex education and instruct children on how to protect themselves from sexual abuse.
