How to make wigs last longer

Published by

FROM as long as can be remembered, wigs have been in the fashion circles, and may probably remain so till somewhere close to the end of time. They come in as many styles and colours that can be imagined, with varying textures as well. However, unlike the natural hair, there are things to keep in mind when working with wigs to ensure they last as long as possible.

Speaking with Makeover, a hairstylist, who identifies herself as Miss Mary, shared tips on how to care for wigs.

Most importantly, the user must be sure of the texture of the wig, so as to adopt the right maintenance tips for caring for it. The importance of this is to ensure they keep looking as new as possible and last very long.

Detangle

First, use the right brush to gently detangle the wig. This is an absolute no-no for curly wig styles though. For curly wigs, use your fingers to gently detangle them.

Shampoo in warm water

Afterwards, mix a small amount of shampoo in warm water, and soak the wig in it for a few minutes. Do not scrub!

Rinse

Remove and rinse the wig gently in another bowl of warm water, until all the shampoo is removed. Remember not to scrub like you’re washing clothes.

Dry

After rinsing, wrap the wig with a towel and gently pat out the water then let it dry.

Oil properly

Wigs should be oiled with the proper oil. Remember that depending on the type of wig, do not assume that one-size-fits-all for washing, drying and oiling. Some wigs come with their special oils. Preferably, patronise a trustworthy dealer for your wigs so that you can get appropriate maintenance tips.
