Make us proud, Reps tell Edo deputy governor-elect

Published by

Members of the House of the Representatives on Thursday charged the Deputy Governor Elect of Edo State, Honourable Philip Shuaibu to make the National Assembly proud in his new assignment.

The Speaker, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, who chaired the valedictory session on Thursday, in Abuja charged the deputy governor-elect to be a good ambassador of the National Assembly.

According to him, “we are sending you as an Ambassador of the National Assembly. You must do all within your power that you don’t bring dishonour to this Institution

“I have no doubt that you will excel, you are a man of great character, and we have no doubt that you will do well and you will succeed”.

Cross session of members who spoke at the valedictory session advised the Deputy Governor elect to offer sound advise to the government and build the gap between the executive and the legislature.

Specifically, the Deputy Leader of the House, Honourable Buba Jibril advised the Deputy governor elect to ensure that their government show respect to the resolutions of the parliament.

Honourable Kolade Akinjo and Honourable Aminu Sulieman also charged the Deputy Governor elect to ensure that the government lived up to its expectations.

On his part, Honourable Shuaibu assured his colleagues that he would not let them down, and promised a good working relationship between the executive and the legislature.

Shuaibu expressed appreciation to his colleagues, adding that Dogara’s tenure as speaker had ushered in good omen for members of the House with respect to political elevation via election and appointment.

According to him,”I lack words to appreciate you all for this privilege. I don’t think there’s anything a tenure can do for man to be proud of that this speaker hasn’t seen. In your tenure as speaker, two members of this House have seen elevation. One is now a minister and another a Deputy governor”.

He assured his colleagues of operating an open-door policy as number 2 man in Edo state and a worthy Ambassador of the House who’s open to good advice at all time whenever they feel he’s going astray in the course of his job.

Addressing the House Press Corps,  he paid tributes  to the members for their professionalism and steadfastness in reporting activities of the House, adding that it was through such efforts that his activities became known by Nigerians as a member of the 8th House of Reps.

According to him,”many people in Nigeria now know me as somebody in the House because of you. If you haven’t reported my activities while I was here, nobody would have known that I was in the green chamber. So I always tell you that I’m also a journalist by virtue of my association with you.

“I can’t forget journalists because when we were fighting the military for democracy, we were incarcerated by Abacha regime and it took journalists who reported our arrest and detention for Nigerians to call for our release. So your reportage save my life and I can never forget you guys”, he disclosed.
