A lecturer in the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Dr Bolatito Adeniji, says there is a connection between physical fitness and mental alertness; and that promoting physical fitness among schoolchildren will inexorably lead to improved academic performance, among other benefits.

She has, therefore, called on the Nigerian government to make Physical Education compulsory in all basic and secondary schools.

Dr Adeniji made the call on Tuesday May 28, 2019 while delivering the 9th Inaugural Lecture of the college entitled ‘Sports, Exercise and Physical Fitness: Enhancement to Education, Health, Stress and Time Management’.

She argued that sports, exercise and physical fitness would help enhance education, improve health, reduce stress and consequently improve time management – which would altogether have positive effect on the nation’s economy.

Mrs Adeniji called for the establishment of physical fitness facilities at various workplaces, schools and communities so as to give opportunities for more people to take part in physical fitness activities.

She said physical activities in youths should be optimized so that when they grow up, regular participation in physical activities would have become an integral part of their lives.

She also recommended that more studies be organised to enable people to clearly identify relationships between knowledge and attitude towards participation I physical fitness activities.

The provost of the college, Dr Ayodele said the college was blessed to have the inaugural lecturer on its staff, describing her as a “very humble personality.”

“In all of the years that she served in the college, this has been a very precious and valuable material for this institution,” he said, thanking her for her “selfless service and notable contributions to the advancement of learning in this college.”
