Maiduguri High Court sentences fraudsters to ten year imprisonment

A Maiduguri High Court, presided over by Justice Fadawu Umar has sentenced one Prince Power and Attah Adoga to ten-year imprisonment for conspiracy and obtaining funds from a Maiduguri businessman by falsehood.

Pronouncing sentences on the duo, presiding judge of court eleven gidan madara Umar Fadawu said that the sentences on the convicts will run concurrently.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Maiduguri Zonal Office had arraigned  Prince Power and Attah Adoga on a-two count charge for the offence of Conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence funds to the tune of one Hundred Fifty thousand naira from one Ali Musa.

On the 14th July, 2017 the EFCC had received a petition against the duo who used the name of Musa Bello, to collect money from Ali under the pretence that the sum would be utilized to service his interest in a business for the supply of fifty-one samples of Iron Scraps.

After the complainant had paid the said amount, the convicts requested additional N2m before the supply will be made and that was when Mallam Ali the complainant became suspicious and started raising alarms on how to get back his funds.

“The offence contravenes Sections 8 (a) and 1(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and other Fraud related offences Act, 2006 and Sections 1(1) (b) respectively,” said Fadawu.

In the case which lasted for almost a year, the prosecution called four witnesses and tendered twelve exhibits to back up its case.

Delivering his judgement Monday justice Umar Fadawu convicted Prince Power and Attah Adoga on two-counts charges preferred against them by the prosecution by sentencing the two to ten years for conspiracy and ten years for obtaining money by false pretence.

“Power and Attah are sentenced to ten years in prison for conspiracy and ten years for obtaining by false pretence,   illegal funds for. The prison terms are to run concurrently.” Said Fadawu.

The convicts are also to pay N150, 000.00 to the nominal complainant, in default which they will serve two years prison term

“The balance of N160, 000 in the fake account of Musa Bello is hereby forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria. All the balance in the Access bank account with the name of Musa Bello is also forfeited to the Federal Government. The account with the name of Musa Bello domiciled in the First City Monument Bank is ordered to be close down”. Said Fadawu.
