Maiduguri flood: Police rearrest convict in Borno

Borno State Police Command has succeeded in the rearrest of an escaped convict, Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a jail term for culpable homicide.

Abubakar Mohammed alongside many others had escaped from the medium-security Custodian centre in Maiduguri amidst the devastating flooding that recently ravaged communities in Maiduguri.

The rearrest was facilitated when on September 15, 2024, at about 1500HRS, a resident of Bulakara Ward, Gubio LGA, alerted the Police after sighting Abubakar in Gubio town following his escape from the Medium Security Custodial Center, Maiduguri, due to the collapse of the fence wall caused by a flood disaster.

Following a swift response by a Police patrol team, the escaped convict was apprehended.

Abubakar will be handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service, as efforts are ongoing to locate any other convicted felons who may be in the area.

The Command remains committed to ensuring public safety and urges members of the public to provide timely information and report any suspicious activities in their environment to support the efforts of the Police as contained in a statement by SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, Police Public Relations Officer,
Borno State Command.
