Life and Times of Sound Sultan: The Top 5 Hits of His Musical Career

Olanrewaju Abdul-GaniuFasasi popularly known as Sound Sultan was a Nigerian singer, rapper, songwriter, comedian, and recording artist. He is considered one of the pioneers of modern hip hop in Nigeria.  Sound Sultan used his music to speak against corruption, bad government, poverty, and societal ills in Nigeria.

He was regarded as one of the pacesetters of modern hip-hop Music in Nigeria. He was notable for using his music to speak against poverty, corruption, bad governance, and societal ills in Nigeria. His career began in 1999 after he won several local talent-hunt shows.  He released his first hit single “Jagbajantis” in the year 2000.  The success of his first single led to him being signed under Kennis Music.

He went ahead to release four albums under Kennis Music. After his contract with Kennis Music ended in 2007, he and Baba Dee started Naija Ninjas. Which is a parent organization for a record label, clothing line, and production outfit.

 

In the year, 2010 under Naija Ninjas, he released “Back from the Future” .He was announced as the “Ambassador of Peace” by the United Nations for his exemplary career and lifestyle. He released his rap single titled “Remember” in 2015 after a long hiatus.

Sound Sultan was a big basketball fan and enthusiast. He collaborated with the organizers of the continental Basketball League after the fallout of the African Basketball League to become a team owner of “Lagos City Stars” who were the 2017 champions. He was also a facilitator of the league’s entertainment.

He mentored a lot of Nigerian artists and was considered a godfather in the Nigerian music industry. He collaborated with international artist Wyclef Jean on “Proud to be African” which also featured 2baba and Faze. They also collaborated on the King of My Country and People Bad project.

 

Sound Sultan showcased his acting skills in Baba Dee’s critically praised comedy film, Head Gone, and others featuring Basket mouth to name a few.

On the 11th of July 2021, Sound Sultan died at 44 after his tough battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma, a rare type of cancer. He is survived by his wife Chichi Morah, now known as Farida Fasasi, and three children.

  • Mathematics (Jagbajantis)

This was the song that began his career. It was an immediate hit and received heavy radio play when it was released in 2000. Mathematics (Jagbajantis) became a street anthem. It was liked by kids and adults.

  • Motherland

This song was released in 2016 in the album “Out Of the Box”. He dedicated this song to Nigerians outside Nigeria reminding them that there is no place like home.

 

  • Ole (Bushmeat)

Sound Sultan featured 2baba and W4 on this 2008 track. This song is known for its popular phrase “Eba mi ki ole”.

 

  • Natural something

This hit song was released in 2012. It was released as the first track on the Rebirth Mixtape. This mixtape was the hard work of the Naija Ninjas ( Karma, Yunggrace, Blackah & Sean) which included Sound Sultan. Natural something became the most outstanding song from that mixtape.

  • Orobo

In 2011, Sound Sultan released the remixed version of the 2010 hit song “Orobo” featuring the talented Flavour N’abania. It became an instant hit on its release like the original.
