LG solicits Lagos govt’s assistance on erosion, flood control

Published by

MR Tunji Halogen, Chairman, Magbon Local Government Council in Badagry, has appealed to the Lagos State Government to save the community from the menace of erosion and floods.

He made the appeal in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry, Lagos State.

Halogen said that the onset of the rainy season had brought untold hardship to the residents of the community.

“The roads in the community are very bad but their condition becomes worse whenever it rains because the whole place becomes flooded; our children cannot go to school due to the state of the roads.

“Cars cannot pass through the community and houses are often inundated by the floodwater; so people often resort to swimming through the flood and taking extra clothing to change into.

“More importantly, farmers in this area cannot take their produce to the market because the roads are very bad and unusable; the farmers’ produce consequently rot away.

“We, therefore, appeal to the Lagos State Government to come to our before our community becomes completely cut off from the rest of the state,’’ he added.

Besides, Halogen blamed the high incidence of malaria cases among the residents on the stagnant water in the neighbourhood.

“We lack drainage channels in our community from which water can flow off; so there are pools of stagnant water across the area and these encourage the breeding of mosquitoes.

“We have many malaria cases among our children; this is because of the filthy environment caused by the lack of drainage systems.

“We need the government’s assistance urgently so as to forestall the eruption of an epidemic,’’ he added.
