LG poll: Don’t give us candidates with questionable characters, EKSIEC tells political parties

The Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission (EKSIEC) has informed political parties to present credible individuals as their candidates for the forthcoming local government election in the state.

The council poll is fixed for December 7, 2019 across the 16 local government areas of the state.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday, the chairman of the state electoral commission, Justice Jide Aladejana urged political parties that would be participating in the poll to conduct proper background checks on their candidates.

The EKSIEC chairman while adding that local government administration is pivotal to the people at the grassroots, said the candidates must be ready to offer dividends of democracy to people when elected.

He said, ” I want to urge political parties for this coming election to conduct a very good check on candidates they will be presenting to us. We don’t want candidates with questionable characters.

” We want people who are credible and have the interest of people at the grassroots at heart. Our people are in dire need of good governance and local government is the closest to the people.”

Aladejana while assuring that the commission would conduct a free, fair and credible poll, he called on political parties to adhere strictly with the election guidelines and mobilize their members for adequate participation.

” We want our people to come out and participate because this is the government that is more closer to them. Their participation in electing credible people will go a long way in helping them to enjoy the dividends of democracy at the grassroots.

The chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) Deacon Lanre Anifowose urged the electoral commission to be transparent in all its activities leading to the election.

He promised that all political parties would support and cooperate with EKSIEC in a bid to have a successful local council poll.

The police commissioner in the state, Amba Asuquo advised political parties and other stakeholders to play the game according to the rule for the state to witness a peaceful poll.

Represented by Patrick Daaor, he urged youth to allow themselves to be used by politicians to distrupts the exercise, revealing the command would be on ground to forestall any breach of peace in the state.
