LG boss charges corps members to spend service year on worthwhile ventures

THE executive chairman, Ukwuani Local Government Area, Mrs Benedicta Ndudi Osakunih-Izuegbu, has charged corps members serving in the council area to spend their service year on worthwhile ventures.

She made the call while playing host to the Delta State NYSC Co-ordinator, Mr. Omotade Ayodele Benjamin in her office, at the weekend.

The council boss said despite the economic recession crippling different sectors of the economy and the deplorable financial situation of the council, her administration would ensure that the issue of non-payment of monthly stipends to corps members serving in the council secretariat was addressed.

The situation, according to her, is because money coming to the council now is strictly meant for the payment of workers’ salaries based on the staff biometric.

Honourable Osakunih-Izuegbu, however, stated that the council, at the moment, had no money to pay for separate accommodations for corps members other than the ones provided by communities and schools.

She added that the Ezionum community was building a big lodge for corps members that would be posted to the town.

The chairman promised to provide a befitting, comfortable and permanent office for NYSC within the council secretariat complex.

While responding to the plea of the NYSC Co-ordinator, she said that the council would provide land for as many corps members serving in the area who would want to go into agriculture to cultivate while their service year lasted.

Earlier in his address, the NYSC State Co-ordinator, Mr Imitate Ayodele Folorunso Benjamin appealed to the chairman to help tackle the challenges being faced by corps members serving in Ukwuani Local Government Area.

Mr Ayodele also informed the council of a day set aside for cultural exhibition within the 21 days orientation of corps members in camp, inviting the Ukwuani Local Government to come and showcase their rich cultures so as to get the corps members acquainted with the culture and lifestyle of the Ukwuani people before their posting.

The state co-ordinator further appealed to the council to provide lands for corps members to cultivate instead of wasting their community development service (CDS) on irrelevances.
