Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation in Oyo, Mr Dotun Oyelade has said local government autonomy can only be practicable if the federal government takes up financial responsibilities for public primary schools and medical institutions.
This, he said, would relieve the financial burden of the state government.
Oyelade stated this when he visited his local government counterpart, Mr Segun Olayiwola in his office.
He argued that the salaries and allowances of teachers and local government employees alone in the state amount to over N5 billion monthly.
Speaking on the vacant Alaafin of Oyo stool, Oyelade’s statement quoted the local government commissioner, Olayiwola, as saying that government was committed to the age-long tradition of the selection process.
He said government would ensure integrity of the selection process and prevent any form of compromise in choosing a new Alaafin.
Olayiwola disclosed that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration had enthroned about 60 imperial majesties, royal majesties, royal highnesses, and Baales, in adherence to due process, and the selection of the Alaafin would follow same due process.
