Let your reports reflect our universities true positions, ASUU tells visitation panels

AS the presidential visitation panels to federal universities in the country are warming up to submit their reports to President Muhammadu Buhari as the visitor to all the universities, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the panels to ensure their reports reflect the true positions of the universities.

The president of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke gave the advice during an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, saying that would be the only way to help Nigerian public universities moving forward.

According to him, whatever recommendations the visitation panels come up with in their reports at the end of the day will either make or mar the public university system.

“So, it is expected that their reports contain the true positions they met on the  ground and their sincere recommendations based on findings,” he stressed.

Professor Osodeke said it was unheard of that no visitation panel was sent to any federal university in the last 10 years, a development which he said was not only contrary to five years time-frame interval as stipulated by law, but also inimical to university education and the economy by extension.

He said’ part of the implications of this is that corrections that should have been made if the original schedule time frame was followed would be omitted and that means the system will, according to him, continue in the same old ways.

Another implication, he added, is that many officers who might have perpetrated one atrocity or the other whole in service may no longer be in the system and to get them to account for their wrong  doings may be difficult or impossible outright.

“So, that is why it is necessary for successive governments and the leaders to always go by the rules in performing their constitutional responsibilities, otherwise the society will continue to suffer for their failure,” he said.

Professor Osodeke also expressed another worry, saying “most times in Nigeria, good reports and recommendations made by government constituted panels are oftentimes being rubbished by the time they come out as government’s white papers.”

“But as far as ASUU is concerned, we don’t want reports of the visitation panels to end up as mere papers,” he stressed.
