Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Delta State, Reverend Okeoghene John Afareha, has urged Nigerians to love and promote same among one another.
He blamed corruption, nepotism and various crimes bedevilling the country for the last three decades on lack of Godfearing individuals.
The cleric urged Nigerians to reconcile with the Lord Jesus Christ and embrace godly lives.
Afareha, who made the assertion at the Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral in Warri, during the 2017 lenten mass, lamented the high rate of corruption, hatred, self-centredness and greed in the country, saying it was not what God expected of Nigerians.
“Nigerians, no matter where they are, no matter who they are, whether they are politicians, governors, managers or directors, businessmen, workers, the citizens they govern, they must love one another, be more charitable to one another, regard the other person as the image and likeness of God like yourself and there will be peace.
“Where we don’t like the other person as ourselves, where there is corruption, there is greed, that is not what God wants us to be,” he noted.
Afareha also enjoined Nigerians to repent from their wickedness and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, stressing, that “the 40 days of lent is a period of genuine repentance and newness of life.”
He explained that repentance was not in the garments people wore, but to believe in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and be saved.
“Jesus has said it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Whether you are in government; whether you are in the army; whether you are in the ministry, business, trade or farming, Jesus has said it, love your neighbour as you love yourself.
“God, Who created you also created me. If we love ourselves, we will become more like God and there will be unity, progress. So, Nigerians should love one another no matter where they are or from,” he admonished.
He urged Nigerians to be more committed to the things of God, adding that the economic recession would soon fizzle out.
