Lecturers are suffering, ASUU tells Buhari

THE chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Deji Omole, has lamented that Nigerian lecturers are really passing through hard times.

Dr Omole stated this in a press statement issued and made available to journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State, to mark this year’s Workers’ Day celebration.

He implored the Federal Government to address the shortfall of personnel, cost and other obligations in public universities.

He said: “The present administration has adopted “Maradona style” in meeting the agreements it signed with the union in 2009 and 2013 memorandum of understanding, stating that the academic staff in Nigerian universities are enduring the worst of welfare.

“We are not better under this government. The government says one thing and does another thing. Only those who have corruptly enriched themselves are smiling now. But as academics, we go to the same market but our salaries are not paid in full. Those in the National Assembly went on two weeks holiday without us feeling their impact other than struggling for power, while their salaries and allowances are paid in full, ours are not.

“They are stylishly processing another brain drain because people are leaving the terrible conditions here for better places even in Africa. This government has not met our agreements but has adopted maradona style. There is imminent crisis, paying lip service to education will adversely affect the future of the country.”
